US authorities announced that they have thwarted a suspected attack plan targeting the UFC Freedom 250 event, which took place on Sunday in Washington to celebrate Trump's birthday.
According to information cited by Fox News, as of Monday, five people were in custody, while investigators have identified a total of 23 people suspected of being connected to the plan.
According to the same sources, the suspects had planned to use drones equipped with explosives against buildings near the event. Authorities believe the goal was to cause a mass evacuation of the area and direct participants to points where snipers would be positioned.
Investigators claim there was a second phase of the plan, which included an attack on the White House gate after the initial strike.
The FBI was notified of the potential threat on June 10 and, in collaboration with other agencies, secured the evidence necessary to arrest a suspect in Cincinnati. During the investigation, conversations on the Signal app were discovered, allegedly involving several people discussing preparations for the operation.
Examination of the mobile phone of one of the suspects led to the identification of at least 23 users of the application, who, according to authorities, exchanged messages regarding preparatory actions before the attack.
One suspect told investigators that the target was to hit "capitalist elites," "billionaires," or politicians who had received donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
The investigation spanned at least 12 FBI regional offices in various U.S. states. FBI Director Kash Patel attributed the prevention of the attack to rapid cooperation between the FBI, the Department of Justice, and law enforcement agencies.
"Thanks to the immediate action of the FBI, partner agencies and the Department of Justice in an operation that spanned several states, multiple individuals are now in custody and the suspected attacks were prevented," Patel said.
UFC Freedom 250 took place on the South Lawn of the White House as part of President Donald Trump's 80th birthday celebrations. According to organizers, about 4,300 spectators attended, including about 1,200 active-duty members of the U.S. armed forces, while 14 athletes from different countries competed in a cage built specifically for the event.
