Well-known activist and actor Florjan Binaj has raised concerns about the decline in protest activism. According to him, protests are shrinking and losing their role today.
"I feel nostalgic for every protest. I regret that they are taking the form of an increasingly smaller pond and are no longer an oasis where ideas and actions were born," he said on the show "Oponencje".
He also criticized the way in which civic reaction has shifted to social media, where virtual debates, memes, and online clashes often dominate, while actual participation in protests has declined.
According to Binaj, the increase in anonymous profiles on social networks indicates a climate of fear, where citizens avoid openly expressing their opinions due to possible consequences. “People are afraid to speak up, even to express themselves under their own names,” he said.
The activist emphasized that when freedom of expression is lacking and the importance of values declines, society faces chaos and uncertainty.
He brought to attention some of the protests that he considers most successful in the country, such as those of students against chemical weapons and the 2022 protests over price increases, adding that today the country is once again facing the same problems.
In the end, Binaj criticized the government, accusing it of distancing itself from citizens and lacking interest in their economic difficulties, while according to him, the pressure on citizens is mainly related to electoral interests.
