Much evidence for the murder of Azem Hajdari has disappeared. The most important piece of evidence is a recording made of Zenel Neza...
27 years ago today, Azem Hajdari, at the time a DP MP, was assassinated. Even today, this murder has a lot of mystery inside. Several people have been convicted and are in prison, but it is not known who ordered his murder and what the real reason was.
On the day of the murder, Azem Hajdari was in the city of Fier, where he was participating in a rally organized by the Democratic Party, then stopped in Lushnje and arrived in Tirana in the afternoon. In the evening, he was informed that someone was waiting for him downstairs, where Fatmir Haklaj and Jaho (Salihi) Mulosmani were.
This is the most controversial part, as there are many who say that former Prime Minister Berisha is involved, who is suspected of ambushing him through his former bodyguard Izet Haxhi, who has been sentenced to 21 years in prison as an accomplice in the crime. It is said that someone called Hajdar.
After being informed, Azem Hajdari with his two bodyguards, Zenel Neza and Besim Çerje, get out and head for the car that was below, knocking on the window. At this moment, Fatmir Haklaj gets out of the vehicle and approaches him with a Kalashnikov in his hands, shooting him. Then, Jaho Mulosmani is supposed to have approached on his right and Naim Çangu on his left, both armed. At these moments, Besim Çerje, the bodyguard positioned on Azem Hajdari's left side, blocks Fatmir Haklaj's weapon by grabbing it tightly with both hands. The direction of the barrel of this weapon was towards the side where Zenel Neza and Naim Çangu were and from right to left of Fatmir Haklaj. When he sees that Fatmir's weapon is blocked, Jaho Salihi approaches and is alleged to have shot his friend Besim Çerje in the head with a 9 mm pistol.
Azem Hajdari was killed in the shooting, while Zenel Neza and Naim Çangu were shot. Zenel Neza was wounded and managed to survive.
Berisha's maneuvers
But this event has many mysteries. Berisha himself addressed a letter to the American ambassador at the time and accuses his bodyguard Izet Haxhi of being involved. But since then, he has never appeared before the court, even as a witness. When the trial of Jaho Mulosmani and the Haxhi brothers took place, Berisha was called several times to court by the prosecutor as a witness and never went.
The trial of Izet Haxhië also took place and the prosecution together with his lawyer requested that Berisha be called as a witness, but the judge rejected the request. It was judge Lazër Sallaku, the one who closed the CEZ file, who left Berisha out of the trial. So in 27 years, Berisha has never been held accountable for the execution of Hajdar.
Disappearance of evidence
Much evidence for the murder of Azem Hajdari has disappeared. The most important piece of evidence is a recording made of Zenel Neza. After the assassination, Zenel Neza was injured and went to the hospital. The first person to go to his bed was Sali Berisha, accompanied by journalist Ylli Rakipi. The latter had a dictaphone in his hand and took a statement from Zenel Neza. This statement was never made public and the tape disappeared. Zenel Neza was also given a diplomatic passport and he fled abroad where he received asylum. He never testified clearly about the event.
Also, another missing piece of evidence is the diary of the former Minister of the Interior, Perikli Teta. In the investigation file there is a letter from Perikli Teta, which shows that during the investigation a diary was seized from him by the investigation group, where he wrote all the events surrounding the murder of Hajdar. In that diary there was very interesting information, where specific names were mentioned. But that diary is no longer in the prosecution file.
When Haxhi's trial began, there were hopes that Berisha would be brought to justice, but the judiciary once again proved powerless, proving the influence of the former prime minister. Today, after 27 years, Berisha laid flowers at Hajdari's bust, but there are many who believe that he had a hand in his elimination. /Pamphlet
