
Croatia has blocked a shipment of peaches from Albania, which were found to be contaminated with nickel metals.
From the analyses conducted in the Croatian state, the presence of Nickel above the permitted norm was determined.
The National Food Authority clarified today, a day after the news that Croatian authorities returned the peach shipment, that the quantity of 5,562 kg was destroyed following the results of laboratory analysis.
"On 22.08.2025, Albania was notified by the RASFF System, in the category Border Rejection Notification with reference number 2025.6367 with the subject: "Nickel in peaches originating in Albania", notified by Croatia.
From the analyses carried out in the Croatian state, the presence of Nickel above the permitted norm was found. Immediately after receiving the notification, the case was passed on for follow-up to the structures of the Regional Directorate of AKU Fier. An inspection was carried out at the exporting OBU, which resulted in there being no stock of the product in its warehouses.
The entity has a traceability system, where it was verified that the product was all sent for export and was not distributed on the domestic market.
The quantity of 5562 kg of peaches was sent to Croatia, where they were destroyed after the results of the laboratory analysis. The case was also referred to the AKVMB for further measures. The AKU has also made the relevant notification on the results of the verifications in the RASFF notification category," the announcement states.
