The idea of burning mandates, Agim Baçi: Repeating the mistake of

Analyst and journalist Agim Baçi has commented on the latest developments in the Albanian political scene, on the eve of the start of the new political season. Baçi spoke about expectations regarding the new government cabinet, the challenges of the opposition and the path towards European integration.

According to him, Prime Minister Edi Rama is expected to bring a more political cabinet than in previous cases, referring to the reality of a deep parliamentary majority.

"I believe that Rama will have a more political cabinet this time than before, also due to the experience of large numbers in Parliament, which paradoxically bring a greater risk," Baci told "News 24".

He criticized the current functioning of state institutions, emphasizing that government actions often depend on the direct intervention of the Prime Minister.

"When we start with actions, we understand that the government only functions when Rama whistles. This shows that institutions do not implement the law independently," he added, warning that the lack of parliamentary control jeopardizes efficiency and citizen trust.

Focusing on Albania's path towards the European Union, the analyst emphasized that the country is still far from meeting key standards, especially in law enforcement.

"If we talk about EU integration, we need to talk about law enforcement. And we are still far from that," he said.

While speaking about the role of the opposition, Baçi emphasized the need for self-reflection and establishing principles that are directly related to the interests of citizens.

"The opposition should ask itself if it is the right instrument for society to trust to change the government. In countries where the strong dominate, it is difficult to rise up. But hope is brought by the citizen himself, as happened in 1992 when the DP won without having any instrument against Ramiz Ali," he emphasized.

Baçi also criticized the opposition's decision to burn mandates in 2019, calling it a mistake that should not be repeated.

"Democracy is a matter of cooperation. I don't think the opposition will commit 'suicide' by burning mandates this time," he added.

Regarding the situation within the opposition, Baçi emphasized the responsibility of the leader of the Democrat Party, Sali Berisha, for the current situation.

"Berisha has a duty to take responsibility for the situation. It is political hypocrisy to blame others below him. Those who do not want to hold him accountable simply want to survive politically, " he said.

In the end, Baçi emphasized that both the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party have the potential to be rebuilt, but this depends on the will to pave the way for change.

"In democratic countries, the path is often paved through resignation and openness to a winning mentality. If the opposition does not establish principles that relate to citizens, it cannot claim to be seen as an alternative to governance," concluded Baçi.
