A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck northern Japan on Thursday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded in Aomori Prefecture at 3:44 a.m. local time, at a depth of about 20 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced.
After the earthquake, the JMA issued a tsunami warning, estimating that waves could reach up to one meter high. The agency later downgraded the quake's intensity to 4 on the Japanese scale, which is a maximum of 7.
This earthquake comes just days after a strong 7.6 magnitude tremor struck northern Japan last Tuesday, raising concerns about the risk of aftershocks and possible damage.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation and are urging residents to stay away from coastal areas and follow emergency instructions.
