Germany was very close to securing victory in the round of 32 match against Paraguay, but everything changed after an arbitrary decision that is being considered one of the most controversial of the 2026 World Cup.
Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp reacted harshly to the disallowance of Germany's goal, calling the decision unjustifiable.
"If that goal is ruled offside, then Arsenal would never be champions of England," Klopp told MagentaTV. "They have scored 60 per cent of their goals that way."
According to critics, the disallowed goal would have given Germany a 2-1 victory in regular time, in front of 63,945 spectators in attendance at Boston Stadium.
Instead, the referee's decision sent the match to a penalty shootout, where Paraguay prevailed, handing Germany their first penalty shootout defeat in World Cup history.
Even English football legend Alan Shearer shared the same stance with Klopp, harshly criticizing the referees' decision and the role of the VAR system.
"The goalkeeper goes down after minimal contact, it was a very easy tackle. I think it was a terrible decision. You have to understand this is a contact sport. The goalkeeper has deceived the referee and the VAR system. The way he went down was just pathetic," Shearer told the BBC.
According to the analysis, Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill's action near the goal would be considered a "flop" in the NBA, while in the Premier League German defender Waldemar Anton's light contact with the goalkeeper would not be considered enough to stop a goal from a set piece.
The decision has also caused numerous reactions on social media, where fans have compared the situation to Arsenal's goals from set pieces last season.
"Remember Arsenal did this all last season and none of the analysts said a word," wrote one user on the X platform.
