The prosecutor in the case, Ols Dado, is also present at the session, while Altin Dumani is absent.
Today, at 09:00, the fourth court hearing against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as well as the other defendants involved in the case, began.
Lawyer Maks Haxhia, Plarent Ndreca and businessman Elman Abule were seen entering the premises of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime. The prosecutor in the case, Ols Dado, is also present at the session, while Altin Dumani is absent.
Veliaj himself will not be present in the courtroom and is represented by lawyer Plarent Ndreca. He has announced that he will not participate until the reading of the approximately 60,000-page file, which was handed over to him in the Durrës detention center about a month ago, a year after his arrest.
The trial continues to be plagued by procedural problems. The previous session also ended without the trial starting, a situation repeated in the first two sessions, mainly due to the absence of one of the lawyers.
During those sessions, clashes were recorded between prosecutor Ols Dado and the defense, with the prosecutor accusing the other side of deliberately delaying the process, emphasizing that the trial has not progressed for eight months. On the other hand, the defense has opposed these claims, stating that it does not yet have the complete file and that the case requires time for proper preparation.
Tensions have also appeared in today's session. Lawyer Maks Haxhia stated: "I am legitimate to follow the law. The lawyers you have mainly appointed are familiar with the investigative file or not? So the legal representative Pranvera Doci is mainly appointed for Fatjon Baci. We want to have a process, not just to have a lawyer. Please, prosecutor, let me finish. Because the process is becoming ridiculous."
While prosecutor Ols Dado replied: "You are not the president of the chamber, sir, you are the defendant's lawyer. Are you ordering me to speak here or am I not speaking?"
Engjëllushe Tahiri: Both you and Maks Haxhia defend defendants in court. You may have other titles, but here you are only legal counsel.
Meanwhile, Erion Veliaj's lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, said that the entire 60,000-page file has not yet been made available to him electronically and that he is still appearing in Court to read it.
According to him, files 142 to 146 are missing and he added that this process risks conflicting with the European Convention.
Plarent Ndreca: You are the ones who decide. Everything that is here is because of the Erion Veliaj trial. And the qualities of a lawyer cannot be stopped if a problem is seen. I have asked you for a schedule for when I will come to court and consult the file. On 26/03 I started studying the file and I was told that electronic files will come. I was physically in court to gain time and to read 60 thousand pages and 1 thousand and more pieces of evidence. Files from 142 to 146 are missing. I want to examine what is missing from this file. There is a risk that this process will conflict with the European Convention.
Also involved in this process is the prison police officer in Durrës, Fatjon Baci, who was escorted to the court. He is accused of having given his phone to Veliaj during an escort to the GJKKO. Due to the absence of his lawyer, Artan Simoni, in the previous session, the court has appointed a lawyer, Pranvera Doci, in the main.
Erion Veliaj is suspected of several criminal offenses, including corruption and money laundering, charges he has publicly denied. 16 other people are also involved in the same case.
Meanwhile, at 1:00 PM, another session is expected to take place at the Administrative Court, where Veliaj's lawsuit against special prosecutor Ols Dado will be reviewed.
