On Saturday afternoon, at the "Selman Stërmasi" stadium, the filming crew of the investigative show "Piranjat" faced an act of violence and intimidation while performing their duties.
The journalist and cameraman were there to question the main shareholder of Air Albania, Sinan Idrizi, regarding the dismissal of two of the company's nurses, who, according to reports, had not even been paid their social security benefits.
Instead of providing an explanation for the situation, Idrizi reacted in an illegal manner, treating the employees unfairly and then using the same arrogance towards journalists who sought clarification on the dismissals. This attitude made clear the real problem: the lack of transparency and accountability.
The situation escalated further after the President of the Tirana club, Refik Halili, forcibly took the journalist's phone, implicating him in the incident. This action has been considered a dangerous precedent for media freedom and the safety of journalists in the country.
Saturday's event comes at a time when cases of pressure and threats against journalists in Albania have increased, calling into question their safety while practicing their profession.
The editorial staff of "Piranha" has publicly denounced this attack and has called for a reaction from international press freedom organizations, as well as from diplomatic missions in Albania.
The duty of a journalist is a public and necessary duty for society. But today it is being openly violated by the arrogance of businessmen and the violence of the groups that protect them. Despite these situations, 'Piranhas' will continue their investigative mission, denouncing violations and abuses.
