Journalist and former Albanian ambassador to Switzerland, Mustafa Nano, has spoken openly about his experience in diplomacy, describing it as one of the worst decisions of his life.
During an interview, Nano said that he was not suited for this profession and that over time he felt uncomfortable in that role. He said that he initially experienced the task positively, but after a few months he was faced with a feeling of emptiness.
Nano said he was not cut out for this profession and that he felt like a prisoner, so he left. He apologized to the people who supported him in this endeavor, however, he said that if he continued he could end up "with Dr. Petrela."
" I had a stint in the world of journalism. Years ago I had a brief experience as a diplomat, but 1997 happened and diplomacy was very partisan. I decided to leave. It was also my desire to become a journalist. This time I left because journalism was getting to my throat. I said I was reliving the experience I had. It turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I went with the good will to do that job, as far as I could tell. I enjoyed it for about nine months. Then at a certain point I saw myself in a void, it wasn't for me.
Diplomats are people who have a certain cut, they have the vocation of a state dignitary that I do not have. For 30 years I was a free man, without subordinates, without superiors. There for the first time, I had superiors, I also had subordinates. I want to apologize to everyone, not only to the authorities who supported my request, because what I did is not a normal thing. It was an event involving many people, the President decreed it, I was on a parliamentary committee, I was surrounded by a lot of kindness. They did not welcome it, but I apologize to them. The reason, it was not my job, I found myself in a bad place. If I insisted on preserving the honor of the job, I could have ended up with Dr. Petrela. There was a conflict between the work I was doing and the person.
There were many things, I went with the idea that I would be active as an ambassador, I could write an article about the relations between Switzerland and Albania. I thought that I could give an interview, and they should give permission to the ambassador to do it. If a newspaper wanted an interview, I had to get permission from the ministry. They were not afraid that I would step out of line, because I knew this, but they had it as a practice. Even an article that you could publish to defend the honor of the Albanian race, you would get permission. I have never gotten permission to write articles.
I remember that a television station wanted an interview about the Ahmetaj case and I didn't see anything wrong with talking about it. I told the journalists okay, I notified the foreign ministry and they said no. I saw myself imprisoned and said, I'm escaping. This is a profession that loves its people, not people like my job or yours. Those things that seem distant have class, elegance, you can enjoy these, but people who are inclined towards this, are determined for this, my hat is off to them. In the embassy today, there are no issues of a political nature. It was a wrong decision, it was one of the wrongest in life. I feel obliged to apologize to the people who were involved in that story. I want the colleagues I had for a year and a half to be people who are career diplomats ," Nano said on the show "The Unexposed".
