After the investigation is closed, SPAK sends Ilir Meta, Monika Kryemadhi and 3 other people to court as defendants. The former president and his ex-wife are accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of income.
SPAK says they used their power to favor businesses in exchange for rewards. Renowned lawyer Romeo Kara said that the Special Prosecution Office has ensured that the charges brought against Meta are also approved by the Court, as he says the evidence is overwhelming and proves Meta's illegal activity.
"Now the preliminary trial process begins and the parties in this trial will review the legality of the acts. This procedure may last longer than in simple trials, I believe it may take up to three or four months. SPAK has been very cautious in this process, perhaps out of fear of being charged with something and has tried to justify all the facts in the indictment," he told "Abc News".
He stressed that former head of state Ilir Meta risks a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. He further emphasized that justice should confiscate all his assets and through this set an example for all state officials.
"I see Meta, if not a summary trial, 12-15, but even more years. With a summary trial, I see 8-12 years in prison. In the corruption charges, Meta has partners. I think that all their assets should be confiscated. First of all, it is deserved. In this situation we have, in the total collapse of morality, especially the political one, we must set an example for deserved punishment ," he said.
