The trial on the merits against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, and other defendants who are facing a regular court process is underway at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime.
Veliaj did not appear in the courtroom this time either, as he continues to oppose holding hearings from behind a glass cage.
Meanwhile, his wife, Ajola Xoxa, who recently gave birth to her child, has requested through legal defense the postponement of today's session and the suspension of the process for 63 days, referring to the medical report and the period of leave after childbirth.
"Ms. Xoxa's will is that expressed in the request to the court. She has been unable to familiarize herself with their content. She has previously had a medical report, but we have prepared and worked on the preliminary requests. The defendant has expressed her position, stating the fact that on June 29 she had a surgical birth and cannot communicate freely and privately with her defense attorneys, therefore an effective defense cannot be realized. The hearing is requested to be postponed until the completion of the incapacity for work report. According to the Labor Code, the postponement of the process is requested until this issue is resolved. The law guarantees 63 days of leave after childbirth. As above, in this factual situation, being unable to provide effective defense, the suspension of the process is requested, based on the right of every mother," said lawyer Gurali Brahimllari.
Through a statement, Xoxa has announced that she wants to be present at the trial herself and does not authorize her lawyers to continue the defense in her absence.
"I request to be personally present and do not authorize my defense attorneys to continue my defense without my presence ," she stated.
In the previous session, the GJKKO suspended Erion Veliaj's pre-trial detention for the third time in a row. The court also rejected his request for a live broadcast of the trial, as well as his request to leave the glass cage.
On the other hand, prosecutor Ols Dado has argued that the defendant's stay in the glass cage does not constitute humiliating treatment, but a measure that guarantees the smooth conduct of the judicial process.
Regarding the request for live broadcast, the court has reiterated its previous position, according to which cameras are only allowed at the beginning of the hearings, during the technical part.
