Pep Guardiola has reportedly been shortlisted as a possible candidate to become the next Italy manager. The 55-year-old is currently enjoying a break after leaving Manchester City after 10 years in charge.
But now he could return to management sooner than expected, with a possible job in the works. Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Guardiola is on the shortlist of potential Italy coaches.
Paolo Maldini, who was appointed technical director of the Italian Football Federation and president of Club Italia last week, is determined to demonstrate his ambition for the national team by appointing a top coach.
Guardiola is considered a dream candidate for the role. However, the Spaniard's annual salary is expected to be the biggest problem. It is reported that Guardiola was earning over £21 million during his final season with Man City.
Serie A clubs are expected to contribute to the salary of a new head coach. But that still wouldn't be enough to match what Guardiola was making in England.
The former City boss is believed to be keen to move into international management at some point in his career. He has been repeatedly linked with the England job in recent years.
Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte have been early candidates for the Italy job. Mancini won the European Championship with the nation in 2021 after beating England on penalties at Wembley. Andrea Pirlo and Carlo Ancelotti are also understood to be in the running.
