A large-scale fire engulfed one of the buildings of a residential complex opposite the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center in Tirana yesterday afternoon.
30 apartments were affected by the fire that started on the first floor of one of the businesses.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Apocalyptic images show the building in flames, rubble at its base and smoke still billowing.
Initially, up to 11 people were reported injured.
But the director of emergency services, Skënder Brataj, announced that a total of six people are in the hospital, four of whom are firefighters. The latter and a citizen were transported to toxicology, while another resident suffered about 15% burns. All are in stable health.
How did the incident happen?
The flames, which are believed to have started after 4:50 p.m. in one of the businesses on the first floor, spread rapidly. In less than an hour, the entire facade of the 12-story building was engulfed in flames.
Dense clouds of smoke covered the area and caused considerable panic and fear among the residents of the building and adjacent buildings, who were able to evacuate in time. Some of them only thanks to the help of firefighters.
The intensity of the fire and the easily flammable material of the ventilated facade did not give firefighters time to stop the spread of the flames. They were also hampered by the narrow alleys, which made it difficult for firefighting vehicles to approach.
This time, there was also help from the air to extinguish the flames, via a COUGAR helicopter of the Armed Forces.
Fortunately, the fire did not cause any casualties.
Only two residents of the building suffered superficial burns, considered by doctors to be minor, while the others had asphyxiation problems due to smoke, but all were out of danger to their lives.
