The European Union seems to be changing course, now putting the spotlight on new parties. Tired of the two main parties in the country still remaining hostages of the old political caste, the EU is looking for new options to support and factor them in.
The meeting of the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, with Adriatik Lapaj of “Shqipëria Bëhet” and Arlind Qorri of “Lëvizja Bashkë” puts actors outside the two main parties in the spotlight. Their inclusion in the agenda of EU representatives creates a new institutional precedent.
Gonzato's meeting with the two leaders of the new parties puts the existing balances into question and opens a direct channel of communication with forces that have so far not had visible international support.
In this context, the EU's signal is not only related to specific names, but to a new orientation: the legitimization of alternatives outside the traditional political binomial and the pressure to revise the rules of the electoral game.
"Valid conversations today with Adriatik Lapaj of #ShqipëriaBëhet and Arlind Qorri of #LëvizjaBashkë, where we agreed that a healthy democracy is built on pluralism. The coexistence of different political voices helps reflect the very structure of society, ensures fair representation, and increases public trust."
Every vote cast should carry the same weight, so that election results reflect the will of citizens. That is why electoral reform matters. A fair and transparent electoral framework ensures that representation in parliament reflects the choices of voters. It empowers citizens, encourages participation and strengthens accountability ”, said EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato.
