The messages are coming out: How the company "Lufra" is rejecting farmers' milk, using more powdered milk
Socialist Party MP Erion Braçe has accused the milk processing company LUFRA in Parliament of conducting a campaign that has directly harmed livestock farmers and domestic milk production.
During an interpellation with the Minister of Agriculture, Braçe said that he has received dozens of messages from farmers in the Bubullima area, who claim that they have faced unfounded accusations about the quality of their milk.
" With additional measures for farmers for anti-fungals and of course also costs for them. That, encouraged by the factories, they were forced to buy anti-fungals and feed the cows with anti-fungals, to my knowledge in vain. And in the focus of those responses of the AKU, in vain. Now, why did the price decrease? Did the supply on the market change? No. The amount of milk production in that period did not increase. On the contrary, it was thrown into the canal. Second. Did the demand on the market decrease? No, the companies have continued to sell. They even do another very important element that I will talk about below. To replace the milk that they did not collect from, from the farmers , "said Braçe.
Farmers' messages
" In January, a whole campaign in the territory and in the media announced that cows were producing carcinogenic milk. I was informed by a group of farmers in Lushnje, they were asking for help everywhere. The messages were Mr. Braçe, how are you, we are farmers from Bubullimë. The LUFRA milk company is destroying us. Until yesterday there was a scheme that supposedly we add water to the milk. They had completely reduced the price. But now they have allegedly produced our milk with aflatoxin. They want to drive us away completely. Where can we put it, where can we take the cows. Where can we drown? ".
Second message: I am from Bubullima. We want you to help us with the villagers' milk that we deliver to Lufra. The only hope for the village is the cows. I have followed you. We are pouring a lot of milk into the canal, which for the people is bloodshed.
Third message: Lufra has left lines everywhere these days, for example, either for morning or evening milk. I believe others have said it, the owner openly says that she gets powdered milk cheaper than local milk.
Another message: Mr. Erjon, I apologize for the inconvenience, but I am a citizen from Bubullima, Lufra has become more aggressive since you made a problem with your status. Today, she is taking revenge on us, she didn't take a drop of milk from us and left us at home. Immediately after these messages, I contacted state institutions to understand what is happening.
Food massacre
But what is the truth behind farmers' refusal to accept milk? Both "Lufra" and "Erzeni" and many other companies are more profitable if they use palm oil and powdered milk in their products than if they buy milk from farmers.
A short while ago, the Competition Authority conducted an investigation into the milk market, after there was a significant price increase. The Competition Authority found no violations in this regard, but another, even more alarming element was discovered.
Companies have reduced the purchase price of milk from farmers, while the final price on the retail market has increased significantly.
During the investigation, the Authority also identified a large increase in milk imports from abroad.
The consulted INSTAT data confirm that during 2024, 224,302 cows were counted in the country, down from 342,683 in 2018. During the years 2021–2023 alone, the number of cows decreased by about 45 thousand. This has caused cow milk production to drop to 745 thousand liters, from 964 thousand liters 10 years ago.
Domestic milk production in Albania is in continuous decline, while paradoxically the import of powdered milk and palm oil, which are used in the food industry as substitutes for natural products, is increasing.
INSTAT data for 2024 show that around 95 thousand tons of milk were collected in the Albanian territory, with a decrease of 6.6% compared to the previous year.
The most significant decline was recorded in sheep's milk by 9.7%, while cow's milk, which accounts for the majority of production, fell by 6.5%. In parallel, cheese and butter production also fell significantly, reflecting the direct consequences of this contraction.
Meanwhile, imports of powdered milk increased by 15% during the period January-April 2025 compared to the same period a year earlier.
It is learned that during this period, Albanians consumed 200 thousand kg of powdered milk and the vast majority of this quantity was imported by the companies Super Milk; LUFRA; AD SH-2014; ELKA SA; Alta Group, etc.
Another alarming factor is the use of palm oil, which has replaced animal fats in many food products. Albania imports about 3,000 tons of palm oil per year, compared to only 380 tons in 2014. Pervecse u ulen cmimin e blerjes se qumeshtit u kerkojne edhe analiza qe i bejne vete keta grumbullyesit te fabrikat e tyre dhe ua lane qumeshtin me pretekstin qe ishte i kontminuar.
