Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al Saud has died at the age of 36, after more than two decades in a coma following a tragic car accident in London in 2005.
Popularly known as the “Sleeping Prince,” Al-Waleed suffered a brain hemorrhage and internal bleeding when he was just 15 years old while studying at a military college in London. After the accident, he returned to Saudi Arabia and was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Royal Medical Center in Riyadh, where he remained in a coma for 21 years, kept alive by a ventilator.
The news of the prince's passing was confirmed by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, in a touching post on the X network (formerly Twitter). He wrote:
“With hearts that believe in the will and destiny of Allah, with deep pain and sorrow, we mourn the passing of our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. May Allah have mercy on him.”
Prince Khaled never gave up hope that his son would wake up one day and categorically refused to disconnect the devices that kept him alive.
After the news of his death, the hashtag #SleepingPrince went viral on social media, with thousands of messages of condolence and prayers for his soul.
The funeral ceremony and funeral prayers for the prince were held yesterday at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
