A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the village of Vernik in Devoll, Korça.
The Prefect of Korça District, Nertil Jole, announced that around 48 forces from the fire service, the forestry service and volunteers have been engaged in the field, working all day and night to bring the flames under control.
The authorities announce that they have also agreed with the Greek side in the event that their assistance will be needed to intervene at the border crossing.
The massive fire has spread very close to the Kapshtica post office and customs police. Firefighters from Devolli, Korça, and Maliqi are engaged in preventing the flames from spreading further.
"The responsible structures are currently closely monitoring the situation, given that due to the influence of the wind, the perimeter of the fire has moved towards the border point area. The Deputy Prefect of Devoll, the Head of the EC Sector in the Prefecture, the relevant structures of the Devoll MZSH, the Border and Migration Directorate, the OSHEE Directorate are currently in the territory, and for the purpose of readiness, 3 vehicles with personnel from the municipalities of Korça, Maliq and Pustec are also present, to guarantee the security of the perimeter of nearby facilities.
"It has also been agreed with the Greek side, in the event that their assistance is needed, to intervene with the vehicles stationed at the Greek border point. And if the request for additional support is assessed early in the morning, it has been agreed today between the two Civil Protection agencies for intervention from the air with a Greek plane from the neighboring region ," said the prefect.
Bringing the flames under complete control is difficult not only due to the large size of the fire but also the difficult terrain that makes it impossible to get vehicles into the area.
