With 8 days left until the deadline for submitting applications for a vacant position on the Constitutional Court, there appears to be low interest in the open competition.
According to Report TV, from the moment applications were received, only 1 candidate, Genc Gjonçaj, who also holds the position of Secretary General of the Assembly, has expressed interest in the race.
He has also competed for the vacancy on the Constitutional Court, which is filled by the President of the Republic.
The deadline to submit names to the Assembly is December 30, and at least 3 names are needed in the final phase for the competition to be valid.
The Assembly will elect, among the top 3 most highly rated judges by the Constitutional Court, the judge who will be a member of the Constitutional Court for 9 years, in the vacancy created after the resignation of Elsa Toska, who resigned in 2024.
Meanwhile, the other vacancy, the one selected by the President, belongs to the position that will be vacated after the end of Sonila Bejtja's mandate.
The President has collected the applications and submitted them for verification to the Judicial Appointments Council.
The removal of Toska, Zacaj and Bejte is part of the scheme to refresh the Constitutional Court with three members every three years.
