After Brazil, Trump threatens Canada: From August 1, 35 percent customs duties

US President Donald Trump has announced that from August 1, the US administration will impose a 35% trade tariff on products from Canada.

In a message published on his Truth Social platform, the US president also attached a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, similar to those sent in recent days to leaders of other countries.

"Instead of cooperating, Canada has retaliated with its own tariffs. If Ottawa will cooperate with me to stop the trafficking of fentanyl, I may consider an adjustment," the document says. As in all letters sent since Monday, July 7, these tariffs will be in addition to those already imposed on specific sectors, such as steel, aluminum and cars.

It is not yet clear whether the new tariffs will apply to all Canadian goods and products or just a subset of them, on which the United States has already imposed tariffs. “During the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has stood firm in defending our workers and businesses,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a post on X. “We will continue to do so as we work toward the revised deadline of August 1.”

Letter to the EU

Trump also stated in an interview with NBC that he intends to impose general tariffs of 15% or 20% on most trading partners. "We will simply say that all the remaining countries, the ones that have not received the letter on the tariffs, will pay, whether it is 15% or 20%". "For Brussels, the letter will be sent "today or tomorrow. ""I would like to do it today", said the US president. "I am talking to the EU, we should send it in the next few hours".

Meanwhile, around twenty countries have already received a similar letter since the start of the week on July 7, with a 25% tariff applied to products coming from allies such as Japan and South Korea, and up to 40% for some Southeast Asian countries.

Brazil at 50%

But it has been Brazil, which until now had not been hit by additional taxes higher than 10%, that has seen the largest increase in customs tariffs applied to its products, with the US president announcing a 50% tariff in response to accusations against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of attempting a coup after losing to President Lula.

The announcements of the new tariffs marked the latest development in a tumultuous week in which Trump has escalated the global trade war, threatening tariffs on more than 20 countries, in addition to an expected 50% tariff on copper. The president cited the lack of a major negative reaction from financial markets, as on Thursday, the day of the letter to Canada, US stocks closed at historic highs. "I think the tariffs have been very well received. The stock market hit a new record today," Trump told NBC./Corriere della Sera
