The football world is in mourning after the tragic news of the passing of young English footballer Billy Vigar, who lost his life at the age of just 21, after a serious head injury suffered during a match in England.
The former Arsenal academy striker collided with a concrete wall while trying to keep the ball in play in a match held on Saturday at the Wingate & Finchley Stadium, within the Isthmian League Premier Division.
As a result of the severe blow to the head, Vigar was rushed to the hospital and placed in an induced coma, writes " Daily Mail ".
His family painfully confirmed the sad news: " After suffering a severe brain injury on Saturday, Bill was placed in an induced coma. On Tuesday he underwent surgery to aid in his possible recovery, but unfortunately, the injury was too severe. He passed away on Thursday morning. We are devastated, but touched by the love that Bill has received from the world of sports ."
Chichester City, where Vigar played this season, cancelled the weekend's match and released a message of condolence: "It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Billy Vigar. He was a beloved lad and an important part of our club. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends ."
Vigar was part of Arsenal's U-21 team until last year and during his short career was also loaned to Derby County and Eastbourne Borough, where he left a very positive impression.
The event has shocked the English football community. Among many touching messages, the English Football Association (FA) wrote: " We are devastated by the news of the death of Billy Vigar. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and all who knew him ."
Derby County, one of his former clubs, said: " Billy was part of our Under-21 team during the 2022-2023 season. His loss is a shock to everyone at the club. Our thoughts are with his family ."
Eastbourne Borough added: " Billy was an incredible lad, on and off the pitch. We are all devastated ."
Calls have been made on social media for a minute's silence at weekend matches in all non-professional leagues in England, in honor of Vigar.
