The recent case of Josep Martinez, Inter's second goalkeeper, involved in a fatal accident in Appiano Gentile where an elderly man lost his life, has brought back to mind a long list of tragic events that have involved footballers over the years.
Some of them have ended in loss of life, others have forever changed the careers of famous athletes, writes "Top Channel".
From Favali to Skirea: accidents that extinguish idols
In June 1965, Foggia player Armano Favali died in a road accident while travelling to Cremona. Just two years later, in October 1967, Torino's Gigi Meroni was hit by a car and killed after a match against Sampdoria.
In April 1979, former Milan and Roma player Paolo Barison died after a head-on collision with a truck near Savona.
Another major tragedy occurred in September 1988, when Gaetano Skirea, one of Italian football's greatest defenders, died in Poland after a car carrying gasoline cans exploded.
The shocks of the 80s and 2000s
In December 1983, Lecce players Çiro Pecela and Michele Loruso died in an accident while traveling to Bari.
In 2001, Nicolo Galli, the son of former goalkeeper Giovanni Galli, tragically died at the age of 17 after a motorbike accident in Bologna.
In the following years, football would lose other names: Dirçeu in Brazil (1995), Federico Pisani of Atalanta (1997) and Vittorio Mero of Brescia (2002), for whom the respective clubs retired the jerseys with the numbers they wore in their honor.
From Rejes to Zhota: modern tragedies
In 2007, Lucien Majele, a striker for Chievo, died in an accident in Verona.
In June 2019, renowned Spanish footballer José Antonio Reyes was killed in an accident with his luxury car while traveling on the highway.
The most recent tragedy is that of Diogo Zhota, the Liverpool and Portugal star, who, along with his brother Andre, lost his life in an accident while on holiday in Spain.
Accidents that left injuries but no victims
Not all accidents end in fatalities. In 1993, Milan's Gianluigi Lentini was left in a coma after a serious car accident. Although he survived, the incident significantly shortened his career.
In March 2023, Sofian Kijin crashed into a gym wall in Belgium, suffering multiple fractures, while in February 2025, Eliot Lee, the Urexham midfielder, miraculously escaped after a severe car crash.
