Mexico City has been gripped by mass protests again, just a week before the start of the World Cup. Retired teachers and judges took to the streets, blocking major traffic routes and several construction sites, causing major problems for citizens' movement.

The protests, which began several days ago, have caused significant traffic delays and numerous diversions, affecting millions of residents of the Mexican capital.

Attention has also focused on Mexico City because of the fact that the opening match of the World Cup between Mexico and South Africa will be held there on June 11. Taking advantage of the international exposure that the tournament brings, teachers' unions and other employee groups organized marches and blocked the city's main streets.

Protesters' representatives stated that their mobilizations are not related to the World Cup, but warned that actions could intensify if President Claudia Sheinbaum does not take their demands into account.

At the heart of the discontent is the teachers' union's demand to repeal the 2007 law that reformed the pension system for public sector employees. According to them, the government should keep its electoral promise to change this law, as well as approve salary increases for teachers.

Unions warn that, if an agreement is not reached with the authorities, the organization of new protests cannot be ruled out, even during the opening match of the World Cup.
