Diego Lugano, the former captain of the Uruguay national team, has sharply criticized FIFA, accusing it of favoring football greats such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi during World Cup tournaments.
In an interview with "ESPN Brazil", where he was asked about the favorite teams to win the next World Cup, Lugano said that Portugal could benefit from a treatment similar to what, according to him, was reserved for Argentina in the "Qatar 2022" World Cup.
" Portugal, maybe a little more, because Cristiano Ronaldo will have a penalty in his favor, just like Lionel Messi had in Qatar. I haven't forgotten that for a second, this is my reality ," Lugano declared.
The former Uruguayan defender, who participated with his national team in the 2010 South Africa and 2014 Brazil World Cups, has previously expressed similar views regarding Argentina's success in Qatar.
According to him, arbitrary decisions have played an important role in Argentina's journey towards the world title.
" Argentina was helped to become world champions because some penalties were awarded out of necessity ," said Lugano, noting that the Argentine team set a record with five penalties awarded in their favor during a single World Cup edition.
Lugano's statements are expected to spark debate in the sports community, as they call into question the impartiality of the refereeing and organization of the most important world football competition.
