From eating in garbage cans to selling cans, how Dillian Whyte became a boxing

Dillian Whyte is no ordinary boxer. His story goes beyond punches, titles, or ring lights. His life is a testament to resilience and constant struggle, from the streets of Jamaica to the toughest stages of world boxing.

This Saturday, in scorching Saudi Arabia, White returns to the center of the storm to face Moses Itauma, a 20-year-old British talent looking to shake up the heavyweight world.

But White, owner of the 22 DOGS brand and a born survivor, knows full well that the toughest fight isn't always in the ring, but in life itself.

" I've always been a fighter. I was born in the middle of a hurricane in 1988. It blew the roof off my mother's house while she was giving birth to me ," White told The Sun, recalling his origins in Port Antonio, Jamaica.

That dramatic birth wasn't the only challenge he faced as a child. Poverty and hunger marked his early years, to the point that he even ate garbage found in garbage containers.

His mother emigrated to England to work and provide a better future for her family, leaving Dilian in the care of relatives. But young White didn't always have supervision or protection. "I was on the streets surviving, stealing food and doing whatever I could to survive," the boxing heavyweight confides.

From the road to the ring road…

At the age of 13, White became a father, and the responsibilities grew, but so did the hardships. In London, he became part of a gang, suffered stabbings and gunshot wounds, and it seemed his fate would be dark. However, he found an unexpected escape in kickboxing.

I got into trouble, I started training to stay out of trouble, and kickboxing and boxing saved my life ,” he says. His first professional fight was at the age of 20, and he soon decided to switch to boxing, where he saw greater financial opportunities and success.

A career with ups and downs and great moments...

Since his professional debut, Whyte has become a key figure in the British heavyweight scene, featuring in memorable bouts against the likes of Anthony Joshua, Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker. His aggressive style, strength and heart have endeared him to many fans, but have also brought his challenges.

In 2022, White had his dream opportunity to fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) world title, but was knocked out in the sixth round by the undefeated Tyson Fury, a devastating blow to his career. However, White's story is filled with more than just wins and losses in the ring.

Contradictions and obstacles outside the ring…

His career has also been marred by controversy surrounding banned substances. In 2012, White was suspended for two years after testing positive for methylhexanamine, a stimulant found in a supplement called Jack3D, which he claims he took without knowing it was banned.

In 2019, a new doping case threatened his career after a match against Oscar Rivas, although he was eventually cleared by the United Kingdom Anti-Doping Agency, claiming it was an "isolated contamination".

The most recent incident occurred in 2023, when his highly anticipated bout with Joshua was canceled due to another unfavorable result, which White again attributed to contamination.

Despite these difficulties, White has decided to continue his career outside the UK, taking on new challenges and looking to regain his lost luster. This Saturday, Dillian White arrives as a stranger on the Saudi scene, ready to prove that experience can prevail over the youth and speed of Moses Itauma.
