Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has floated new ideas for the future of European football, proposing the creation of a “Super Championship” that would include the continent’s biggest clubs. In an interview with The Athletic, he also discussed the need for changes to the rules of the game, with the aim of increasing the spectacle and attracting younger generations.
Proposal for a European "Super Championship"
De Laurentiis suggests that the most important clubs from the major leagues – Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England – unite in a new seasonal competition.
According to him, France would be represented by three teams, Germany by four, Italy by five (Juventus, Inter, Milan, Napoli and Roma), England by five and Spain by four.
" Let's create a super championship and we'll have a wonderful competition ," he said.
He stressed that this idea differs from the previously proposed Super League project, opposing the invitation-only model promoted by Real Madrid and Florentino Pérez. According to him, the new competition would not replace the Champions League, but would take place in parallel during the season.
Concern about falling interest rates
The Napoli president has raised the alarm about the gradual loss of audience, especially among young people. He argues that the pace of the game and the length of matches are among the main factors.
" The younger generations are losing interest. The matches are too long and with too many interruptions. They don't have the patience to follow such a slow game ," De Laurentiis declared.
Proposals for changes to the rules
To make football more attractive, he suggests some strong changes to the structure of the game:
Reducing halves from 45 minutes to 25 minutes each, with effective playing time, similar to basketball
Replacing yellow and red cards with temporary suspensions (5 minutes for yellow, 20 minutes for red)
Eliminating delays and simulations on the field through more immediate penalties
According to him, these measures would increase the intensity and create more dynamism in the match.
The need for more spectacle
Another problem he identifies is the low number of goals, which according to him negatively affects the attractiveness of the game.
" There are too few goals. Without goals there is no spectacle. To change this, the rules need to be changed ," he stressed.
