A touching story has come to light amid the tragedy caused by the powerful earthquakes that hit Venezuela.
Andrea Belo, the wife of Venezuelan footballer Hector Belo, lost her life after protecting their young daughter during the collapse of the building they were in, in one of the earthquake-hit areas in northern Venezuela.
According to the footballer's account and local media reports, the girl managed to survive thanks to the sacrifice of her mother, who protected her until the last moments of her life.
In an emotional message published on social media, Hektor Belo made a touching dedication to his late wife.
" One day I will tell our daughter the story of how you saved her and how you gave your life for her. You were a brave woman who never abandoned her, even when you took your last breath ," the footballer wrote.
He announced that their daughter and her aunt are in the hospital and out of danger, while the family is dealing with the tragic loss of Andrea.
Meanwhile, search and rescue teams continue operations in areas affected by the two earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela. According to authorities, at least 589 deaths have been confirmed so far and around 2,980 injured, while thousands of people are still missing.
Foreign nationals are also reported to be among the victims, including four Spaniards, one Portuguese and two Brazilians. The international community has begun to offer assistance to cope with the consequences of the disaster.
