Professional sport in Italy, and football in particular, is on the verge of a legal revolution that is expected to radically change the way contractual relationships between clubs and athletes are handled. A new decree approved by the Council of Ministers has brought about a significant change in the legislation on labor relations in professional sport.
Specifically, article 11 of this decree provides that professional contracts can last up to 8 years, instead of the previous limit of 5 seasons that had been in force for nearly 45 years. A change with a major impact on the way clubs operate.
This innovation allows clubs to treat players as long-term assets. Clubs will have more time to benefit from their investments, as player card costs can be amortized over 8 years instead of just 5, making financial management easier.
