Last season, Juljan Shehu ended as the leader of Uidzeu and is strengthening his role at the start of this season. It is no wonder that fans are eagerly awaiting news about the Albanian midfielder's contract extension.
That could happen this month. The 26-year-old has started to show his more attacking side this season, scoring four goals. Many consider this to be his best period to date at the Pilsudski Stadium. The first few weeks of the current season suggest that things could go even better. He scored the winning goal in the first match against Zaglebie Lubin and put in a brilliant performance against GKS Katowice, where he provided the decisive assist for the first goal.
He should have been on the scoresheet too, but his celebrations at the start of the second half were unfairly dampened by the VAR decision, which ruled his shot a handball. In both home games, Shehu was voted the team's best player by the fans. The only challenge in which he did not shine was the match in Białystok, although it was not a poor performance. Fans still see him as a key figure in Zeljko Sopic's tactics, so they hope he signs a new contract, as the current one is valid until the end of the season. This is the result of the fact that he played the required number of minutes and activated a special clause in April, included in the previous agreement, the finalization of which was strongly supported by the previous coach, Daniel Mysliuiec.
On the one hand, it can be argued that there is a certain “debt of gratitude” owed to Uidzeu by the player, who was not neglected after a serious knee injury. But on the other hand, it is important to remember that Shehu signed the contract at a time when Lodz had much more limited financial resources. Today, the Albanian may feel dissatisfied with the fact that young players earn much more than him, without having as much impact on the team’s performance. A similar situation arose with Fran Alvarez, with whom an agreement was recently reached, offering him a significant salary increase. When asked a few weeks ago about his future, Shehu preferred to avoid speculation.
“ We are talking to the club about my future. I still have a year left on my contract, so it’s not like my contract is ending now. I am focused on Udzeu. In every training session and in every match, I do everything I can to help the club, but I am not thinking about a new contract,” he said after the match against Zaglebie. Sporting director Mindaugas Nikolicius was also asked to comment on the same issue, confirming that negotiations are ongoing. He added that he hopes to conclude the matter this month: “We are still in talks. I hope to sign a new contract in August. That is my plan ,” he said in an interview with “Interia”.
