Group A of the 2026 World Cup has concluded its group stage matches in the early hours of the morning Albanian time. Mexico, who had previously qualified for the 1/16, triumphed 3-0 against the Czech Republic, sealing the elimination of the European representative. Meanwhile, South Africa won 1-0 against South Korea and secured their ticket to the next stage, making history as they manage to get past the group stage at a World Cup for the first time. South Korea will have to wait for the conclusion of the other group matches to find out if they will be ranked among the eight best third-place teams.
At the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 thanks to goals from Chavez Garcia, Quinones and Fidalgo, all in the second half. With this success, the hosts closed Group A with nine points, three wins from as many matches and without conceding a single goal, setting a historic record, as it is the first time they have won all of their group stage matches at a World Cup.
One of the most exciting moments of the match was the 78th-minute introduction of veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. At the age of 40, he was making his sixth World Cup appearance, and his fourth consecutive appearance.
In Monterrey, South Africa secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea. Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, a result that gave the Africans second place and direct qualification to the knockout stage.
In the final standings of Group A, Mexico leads with 9 points, South Africa ranks second with 4 points, South Korea has 3 points, while the Czech Republic closes the group in last place with just 1 point.
So far, the national teams that have qualified for the round of 16 are: Mexico, USA, Germany, Argentina, France, Norway, Colombia, Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Morocco and South Africa.
