The Serbian national football team was defeated 0-5 by England on Tuesday evening in Belgrade, with the match being valid for Group K qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. On October 11, Albania plays in Belgrade, while the Serbs expect an exemplary punishment from FIFA for nationalist chants against Kosovo.
Beyond the challenge, the match produced tension and violence. The two fan groups clashed outside the stadium, while inside the "Rajko Mitic" facility there was also violence between Serbs, those who support President Vučić and those who are against.
In addition, there were banners with the slogan "Kosovo is Serbia" and their refrain sung during the meeting. Also seen were maps of the state of Kosovo with Serbian colors and nationalist inscriptions.
The match was played in a partially closed stadium as punishment for racist chants in the previous match against Andorra, where 15% of the capacity was empty. The Football Federation of Serbia issued a statement before the match, calling on fans to behave civilly, adding that over the past five years they have been fined over 700,000 euros by FIFA and UEFA for repeated violations.
If Albania won 1-0 against Latvia in Tirana and 'Air Albania' was at 20 percent of reduced capacity because the Serbian anthem was whistled by our fans in the match against Serbia on June 7, the same standard should be maintained against the Serbs.
The Serbian Football Federation itself had asked fans not to engage in such behavior because they are under FIFA surveillance. It seems that French referee Clement Terpin and the delegate have noted these unsportsmanlike gestures and will refer them to the FIFA Disciplinary Committees. With the warning they had in force and the discriminatory behavior against Kosovo, Serbia risks playing the October 11 match in Belgrade against Albania with a reduced squad, not to say empty; which would be in favor of Silvinho's red and black team, since this duel is a final for the fate of Group K of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
