Former Premier League player Roni Stam has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his part in a €41.5 million drug smuggling operation.
The 41-year-old has been charged with conspiracy to smuggle more than two tons of cocaine into the Netherlands. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service alleges that Stam is a key player in that multi-million dollar operation.
There were calls for Stam to be jailed for 13 years, but the judge at the Breda court acquitted him of two more serious charges. He was convicted of trafficking 724 kilograms of cocaine, as well as large quantities of MDMA and nitrous oxide.

Stam and his associates are accused of smuggling drugs from South America, with a money laundering ring worth £2.2 million.
Stam admits to being involved in a plot to send 20 kilograms of cocaine to the German city of Frankfurt from Brazil.
He claimed that his payment for it was "a sum worth one kilogram" and that he regrets his involvement with any leader of the criminal network.
