Luca Zidane, the son of world football legend Zinedine Zidane, is ready to write his own history on the international stage.
The Granada goalkeeper, 27, has received his first official call-up to the Algerian national team, choosing to represent his family's country of origin after deciding to switch sides from France.
Born in Marseille and trained at Real Madrid's academy, Luca was given a hero's welcome in Algeria after coach Vladimir Petkovic decided to include him in the squad. The call-up comes at a special moment, as Algeria have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In his first statement after arriving in Algeria, Zidane expressed himself excited and grateful: "I am very happy to be here. It is a great pride for me and for my family. My grandfather is proud and everyone supports me. I will give everything to make the people of Algeria happy."
Although Petkovic opted to start Alexis Guendouz in the 3–0 win over Somalia, Zidane's inclusion in the squad carries great symbolic and sporting value. He could make his debut in the final qualifier against Uganda at the Tizi Ouzou stadium.
His choice to represent Algeria has a deep emotional meaning. As the son of a world champion captain, Luca wants to create his own identity on the international stage and contribute to the success of a team that is increasingly attracting talents of Algerian origin from Europe.
Currently in fine form with Granada, where he has started seven games this season, Luca Zidane is seen as a serious contender for the starting goalkeeper role. With his composure and leadership, he is expected to be a key part of the team aiming to make its mark at the next World Cup.
The name "Zidane" looks set to return once again to the biggest stage of world football — this time with a new story, but with the same legacy of passion and pride.
