In football, the logo of a club or national team is much more than a graphic symbol. It represents the identity, history and values of the team, conveying through its colors and elements the message of what it stands for. Many of the emblems include animals, historical figures or mythological creatures with special meaning.
One of the most unique symbols is that of the Japanese National Team, which features Yataragasu, the mythological three-legged raven, on its crest. In Japanese tradition, Yataragasu symbolizes the Sun and is considered a divine guide. Its three legs represent heaven, earth, and man, while in one of them it holds a red ball on a white background, a clear reference to the national flag of Japan.
According to Japanese mythology, Yataragasu played a crucial role in the founding of the country. Legend has it that the first emperor of Japan, Jinmu, lost his way in the Kumano mountains. It was then that the mythological raven appeared and guided him to Yamato province, where Jinmu was proclaimed emperor and laid the foundations of the Japanese state.
For this reason, the Japan Football Association has included Yataragasu in its emblem, considering it a symbol of good luck, leadership, and sporting success.
At the 2026 World Cup, Japan, led by Hajime Moriyasu, have made a positive start to their campaign, recording a convincing win over Tunisia and a draw against the Netherlands. With four points and one match left in the group stage, the Japanese have a good chance of securing qualification for the knockout stage, hoping that Yataragasu will bring them luck again this time.
