The conflict with Real Madrid's management and the controversy over the photo with Erdogan deepened the rift between Mesut Özil and his father, directly affecting his family relationships and career.

Everything happened like in a divorce. The Özil vs. Özil family case.

A separation war ensued, involving hurt feelings, pride, honor and ultimately millions of euros and a luxury car. The bitter conflict between Mesut Özil (37) and his father Mustafa (58) continues to weigh on the entire family today. Just as Mesut has closed the chapter with Germany, he has also cut his father out of his life.

He says he is now happy, that he has found peace with his wife Amine and their two daughters, Eda and Ela, as Mesut Özil tells BILD journalist Torsten Rumpf over the phone.

Özil is eagerly awaiting the birth of his third daughter in the new life he has built on one of the large hills on the Asian side of Istanbul. Germany is not part of that life and, according to those close to him, he is not currently considering a return.

Father Mustafa does not know this life. He has never seen Mesut's daughters, his nieces. He has no contact with his daughter-in-law, Amine, nor with Mesut's other son, Mutlu, whose family he also does not know.

Mustafa receives signs of life from his son through his ex-wife Gülizar and daughter Duygu. There were also years of no communication between him and Gülizar. Today they speak occasionally.

Why is there so much conflict, pain and wounds? Why has there been silence for years in the Özil family? Why does the family remain so deeply divided?

Mustafa's father says he can no longer fully explain it. He came to Germany at the age of two from the Turkish Black Sea coast, the son of a migrant worker. At the age of 17 he married Gülizar (61) and together they had four children. One of them became an extraordinary footballer and world champion.

BILD journalist Torsten Rumpf has known Mustafa since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. They met then in a confidential conversation at a hotel in Cape Town and have kept in touch ever since.

Today they meet again at the Breidenbacher Hof hotel in Düsseldorf. Mustafa Özil speaks calmly about the "separation" from his son.

Mesut fired him in 2013, both as a father and as a manager. One of the reasons was the parents' broken marriage and suspicions of extramarital affairs. "That's also why he fired him as an advisor," says Deniz Kosek-Özil (35), Mesut's half-sister. She recalls their childhood in Gelsenkirchen and the moments they shared.

However, when Mesut talks about his family, it is not mentioned. In a television documentary he only mentions his brothers and sisters from his parents' marriage. Deniz says he last met him in London, but then there was no contact.

A similar situation occurred between Mesut and his father. After a major conflict, the relationship broke down. Mustafa had managed his career for years, but the contract negotiations with Real Madrid got out of hand. Mesut still blames his father for this, writing in his autobiography that he lacked composure in the negotiations.

According to him, Mustafa stormed out of the Real Madrid president's office and slammed the door, which negatively affected Mesut's position at the club. The deal fell through and a transfer to Arsenal was arranged instead in 2013.

Mesut then told his father that he wanted to stand on his own two feet. Mustafa reacted by deleting his Twitter account with millions of followers. In turn, Mesut changed the locks on his office in Düsseldorf, completely excluding his father from professional activities.

Özil's father previously told BILD that his son's circle had a negative impact on him, also citing his decision to leave the German national team.

He says he was hurt by the way Mesut withdrew from the national team, without a press conference and only via Twitter. According to him, Mesut remains an example of successful integration.

In 2014, Mustafa sued his son's company for 630,000 euros, claiming commissions on contracts he had negotiated himself. The case was settled out of court: Mesut paid him 8.1 million euros and also gave him a Ferrari F458.

In his autobiography, Mesut describes this conflict as “a sad chapter in a very long and harmonious father-son relationship.” He writes that he will never forget it, but the silence continues today.

Father Mustafa continues to speak about his son with pride, without hatred, but with pain. He expresses the desire for reconciliation and hopes that Mesut will take the first step./ BILD
