Diego Armando Maradona had predicted back in 2018 what the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, would look like.
In an interview at the time, the Argentine legend expressed with humor, but also with critical notes, that football would increasingly adapt to television demands and advertising.
" Americans want four pieces for advertising ," Maradona declared.
Today, this statement has returned to the spotlight, as changes in the effective duration of matches and the numerous extra minutes have led many fans to consider his prediction to have come true.
Maradona expressed that he did not like the direction that football was taking.
" I don't like it, there's no passion. Canadians can be good skiers, whatever, and the Americans would like to play four 25-minute segments for commercials. We'll have to play 100 minutes ," he said, laughing.
In the same interview, he also commented on expectations for Mexico in the World Cup.
" In this World Cup, Mexico comes out on top, even though it doesn't deserve it. In reality, if Mexico wins two games, the Mexicans will think they will go all the way to Brazil or Germany, like I did, but then they are eliminated ," Maradona declared.
Although his comments were laced with humor and irony, many of them are remembered today as a warning about the increasing influence of commercial interests in modern football.
