Ecuador's elimination from the World Cup after a 2-0 loss to Mexico has sparked a wave of reports in Ecuadorian media, which claim that some national team players have faced threats to their families before the match.

According to these reports, individuals suspected of being linked to drug cartels in Mexico contacted several Ecuadorian players shortly before the match, communicating private information about their families. Local media claim that this psychological pressure affected the team's morale and performance in the match held at the Azteca stadium, where Mexico secured qualification to the round of 16.

However, no public evidence or official documents have been presented to support these allegations. The Ecuadorian Football Federation, FIFA and Mexican state authorities have all said they have not received any official complaints or denunciations from players or team staff.

Ecuadorian journalist Carlos Vera has also reacted to this issue, saying that he has information about such a case, but stressed that he cannot speak with certainty about all the allegations.

He said: " Did the mafia send threats? I am personally informed that such threats were sent to the family of one of our national team players who lives in Mexico. I cannot speak with 100% certainty for the others, but only such a scenario could find a logical explanation for what we saw on the field. The team played without a shred of courage; incomprehensible, amateurish mistakes were made, and we missed clear chances. Our performance was completely inexplicable. It is very likely that the families were under direct threat ."

In Mexico, the reports have been met with critical reactions. Some in the media and public opinion have described the claims as unfounded and an attempt to justify Ecuador's elimination from the tournament.

For now, the matter remains at the level of allegations reported by the media and has not been confirmed by the competent institutions. If new evidence or statements from the footballers themselves are presented in the coming days, the case may take a different turn.
