Tom Hanks surprised 'big and small' in New York when he was seen traveling by subway.
Despite his A-list status, the 69-year-old Oscar winner proved to be one of Hollywood's most down-to-earth stars as he used public transport to get around the city.
To the surprise of his fellow passengers, the actor, who has an estimated net worth of $400 million, was seen standing on the train wearing a jacket over a dark gray sweater, black pants and an olive-colored Yankees baseball cap.
The "Forrest Gump" legend complemented his simple look with transparent glasses and a protective face mask, which hid most of his face.
Hanks seemed completely calm during his journey, as he stood by the doors and looked around the crowded carriage like any other passenger.
Some sharp-eyed travelers finally seemed to recognize him, as one took photos of the unexpected encounter that quickly began circulating online.
He is among a number of celebrities, such as Harrison Ford, who have recently been seen using the subway to get around Manhattan.
Hanks' appearance comes just months after his daughter EA Hanks released her shocking memoir detailing her allegedly troubled childhood.
EA's book details the struggles of Hanks and her mother, the late actress Samantha Lewes, who died in 2002 after a battle with cancer.
In June, the actor praised his daughter, 43, for being so honest about a dark time in her life and also noted that he wasn't at all shocked that she had the strength to do so.
"I'm not surprised that my daughter had the opportunity, as well as the curiosity... to look into this thing that I think she was incredibly honest about," the "Toy Story" star told Access Hollywood.
The acclaimed memoir was released in April and examines her life growing up with two Hollywood icons, Hanks and Samantha Lewes.
EA Hanks spent the first five years of her life living in Los Angeles with her mother and father, until they divorced in 1987.
In the book, she recalled how her mother chose to move her older brother Colin, now 47, from Los Angeles to Sacramento without warning.
She also revealed how Samantha's 'emotional and physical abuse' brought her back to live with her father.
In an excerpt shared with People, she recalled: "I was born in Burbank, but after my parents split up, my mother took me and my older brother to live in Sacramento. I have few memories of my early years in Los Angeles.
Eventually a divorce settlement was reached and I visited my father and stepmother on weekends and during the summer, but from the ages of 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a girl from Sacramento.
I lived in a white house with columns, a courtyard with a swimming pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses plastered on every wall.
As the years passed, the yard became so filled with dog poop that you couldn't walk around, the house smelled of smoke.
"The refrigerator was empty or full of expired food, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, reading the Bible intently," Hanks' daughter said.
