Madonna has spoken for the first time about the cancellation of the much-hyped biopic project about her life and career, attributing the failure to disagreements with Universal Studios over the production budget.
In an interview with Interview magazine, the artist confessed that she had invested four years of work in developing the project, including writing the script, selecting actors, and financial discussions with the studio.
"I was making a movie about my life. I worked on the script for two years and spent two years with Universal Studios working on the budget and casting ," Madonna said.
According to her, her life story required a costly production, which became one of the main obstacles to making the film.
"I had an extraordinary life. I lived a lot and I needed a big budget," the singer said.
Madonna added that studio executives did not share her vision for the project and also expressed reservations about the idea of filming in Serbia, an alternative thought to reduce costs.
After the film was canceled, the artist discovered that Netflix had expressed interest in bringing her story to series format. However, this process also faced difficulties, as she could not use the existing script without paying to restore its rights, while finding a creative team proved more complicated than anticipated.
The film project had been in development for years and actress Julia Garner had been selected to portray Madonna on screen.
However, recent reports suggest that the artist is working on a limited series about her life in collaboration with director Shawn Levy.
Meanwhile, Madonna is expected to return to the music scene with her new album "Confessions II", which will be released on July 3.
