102-year-old neurologist's advice: If you want to live long, don't

Most people slow down as they age, and their lifestyle changes. But that hasn't happened for Dr. Howard Tucker.

The Cleveland-born neurologist in the US treated patients for nearly eight decades, earning the title from the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest practicing physician, just before his 99th birthday.

He continued to practice medicine until the age of 100, stopping only when the hospital where he worked closed its doors in 2022.

Now 102 years old, he has finally hung up his white apron, but he hasn't stopped the pace at all.

“Retirement, I think, is the enemy of longevity,” Tucker recently told the TODAY show.

He now spends his days lecturing to future doctors at Case Western Reserve University and providing consulting on medico-legal matters, thanks to the law degree he received at the age of 67.

"You have to have a purpose in life and wake up in the morning knowing what you're living for," he added.

He is still "looking for opportunities" for another job, although he admits: "no one can take him at that age."

Tucker says he has no intention of quitting his current workload. But for anyone thinking about giving up, he has some advice.

“If they retire from their jobs, they should at least do something as a hobby, whether it's community work or personal activities,” he said, adding, “The brain needs a stimulus every day.”

Science backs it up. Studies show that having a sense of purpose, constantly learning new things, and engaging in activities that require problem-solving, creativity, and focus are essential for maintaining mental acuity well into old age.

With his 103rd birthday approaching in July, Dr. Howard Tucker says he doesn't waste time worrying about the end.

He has gone viral on TikTok while promoting What's Next, a documentary about his life, produced by one of his nephews.
