Thomas Markle, the 81-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex, has been rushed to hospital and is currently in intensive care after undergoing a long and complicated operation. The news was confirmed by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who has revealed details of his father's deteriorating health.
Thomas Markle fell seriously ill at his home in the Philippines on Tuesday and was rushed to hospital, where doctors assessed him as being in immediate danger of dying. The first operation, which lasted about three hours, was carried out on Thursday local time.
However, according to his son, doctors have decided that the 81-year-old must undergo another operation, this time to remove a blood clot that poses a serious risk.
Thomas Markle's health has been deteriorating for years. He has suffered two heart attacks and a stroke, and his latest health problems appear to have peaked this week. After a decade spent in Mexico, he relocated to the Philippines earlier this year.
Thomas Jr., in a statement to the Daily Mail, indicated that the situation was dramatic:
"The doctors told us his life was in immediate danger. I personally took him to the hospital as soon as he got worse."
Relations between Thomas Markle and his daughter, Meghan, have been strained since 2018, when she married Prince Harry. Thomas suffered two heart attacks just days before the royal wedding, meaning he was unable to walk Meghan down the aisle. They have not been in contact since.
The rift deepened after Thomas posed for paparazzi before the wedding, a move that drew harsh criticism from the media and from within the royal family. The relationship reportedly broke down completely after a tense phone call with Prince Harry, which Thomas cut off while he was still in the hospital recovering.
