A general practitioner in Australia has been permanently banned from practising after justice and health regulatory authorities found her guilty of 'engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a patient who had mental health problems'.
According to materials reviewed at a hearing, doctor Maria Bastas was accused of a personal and sexual relationship with the patient, which allegedly lasted from 2015 to 2022. The case was reviewed in a court in Australia and then in a health disciplinary body.
In the documents submitted, it is alleged that the contacts between them began after exchanging phone numbers during a medical consultation and then extended to private meetings outside the clinic. According to the patient's statements, such meetings took place in various places, including the doctor's vehicle and work premises.
Also, during the hearing, allegations were made about visits to her apartment and social gatherings that included alcohol consumption. The patient stated that the relationship was subsequently terminated, which according to him had negatively affected his emotional and health condition.
Later, he filed a complaint with the relevant health authorities, which led to the initiation of disciplinary and judicial proceedings.
For her part, the doctor denied that the relationship was sexual, but admitted that the communication and intimacy crossed professional boundaries. However, the jury accepted the patient's version, based on telephone evidence, testimony and the pattern of contact over the years, deciding to permanently revoke her license to practice.
