Presidential election in Kosovo, parties continue "ping-pong"; early

The constitutional deadline of April 28 increases political pressure, as the Assembly prepares for a plenary session with several important issues on the agenda.

Representatives of the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), have stated that there are sufficient votes in the Assembly to elect the president even without the involvement of this party, if the Vetevendosje Movement (LVV) is interested in moving the process forward.

PDK Secretary General Vlora Çitaku stressed that the responsibility for resolving the situation lies with the parliamentary majority. She stated that, in the absence of cooperation with PDK, LVV could secure votes through MPs from other parties.

"We have requested that this issue be treated seriously and that Prime Minister Albin Kurti's request to PDK be formalized through an official letter. So far, such a letter has not arrived at our address ," Çitaku declared.

-Lack of communication after the Constitutional Court ruling

After the constitution of the Assembly, Prime Minister Kurti had meetings with the leader of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, but these contacts have not continued after the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court on the president's case.

Meanwhile, Kurti has met four times with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, including one meeting after the Constitutional Court's decision. Abdixhiku has recently stated that he seeks a broader political agreement with the LVV and does not support any of the current presidential candidates.

-LVV: We are working towards consensus

On the other hand, representatives of the LVV have announced that efforts are underway to reach a political consensus. The head of the parliamentary group of this party, Arbërie Nagavci, expressed optimism that a solution can be found within the remaining deadline.

According to her, Prime Minister Kurti's commitments aim to avoid early elections, achieving the necessary support for the election of the president.

-Constitutional deadline and election risk

Based on the Constitutional Court's ruling, the Assembly must elect the president by April 28. If this does not happen, the country is expected to go to early elections, which must be held within 45 days.

-Next session and other issues in the Assembly

The political statements were made after a meeting of the Presidency of the Assembly, where it was decided that the next plenary session will be held on Friday. The agenda is expected to include the review of the decision to send the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) to an international mission in Gaza, as well as the Draft Law on the Bureau for the Confiscation of Unjustified Assets.

The First Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Ardian Gola, announced that there is agreement to review this draft law in second reading, while awaiting the contribution of the deputies to improve it.

On the other hand, PDK has announced that it will announce its position on this draft law during the session. Çitaku stressed that her party does not oppose the fight against illicit enrichment, but expresses concern about, as she called it, "political games" in the law drafting process.
