A serious incident has occurred in Vienna, where the collapse of scaffolding at a construction site took the lives of four Albanian workers. Another is in critical condition.
A serious accident at a construction site in Vienna, Austria, has ended in tragedy, leaving four people dead and one seriously injured.
The incident occurred this afternoon in the Alsergrund neighborhood, on Porzellangasse street, during renovation work on a loft. According to Austrian authorities, scaffolding and concrete columns collapsed at around 2:30 p.m., knocking several workers into the yard of an old building.
According to media reports and family members, the victims are suspected to be citizens of Kosovo. Among them was identified as Pajtim Bajrami from the village of Klinë e Poshtme in Skënderaj.
"With deep sorrow we received the news of the loss of life of our uncle's son... along with his three friends from Kosovo ," the family's reaction reads.
Vienna fire department spokesman Martin Hofbauer said the entire structure collapsed, trapping five people. The rescue operation proved difficult, as in some cases building materials had to be removed manually.
A 45-year-old worker was pulled from the rubble alive, but with serious injuries to his head, spine and limbs. He was transported to hospital and is in serious condition.
Initially, there were suspicions of other people being trapped, but around 6:00 PM, authorities confirmed the tragic death toll of four.
Police and labor inspectors have launched investigations to determine the causes of the accident, while the area has been cordoned off and witnesses are being questioned.
