The Kosovo government has announced that procedures have begun for the formation of a special security structure. Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has stated that the gendarmerie will have a wide range of responsibilities.
Regarding this initiative, KFOR has made it clear that they are closely following statements from Kosovo institutions on this issue. KFOR stated that we expect security organizations in Kosovo to continue in this cooperative approach with it to contribute to security in Kosovo and regional stability.
"NATO continues to cooperate with all security organizations in Kosovo and to offer its contributions to sustainable security in Kosovo, for the benefit of all. In accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999, KFOR ensures a safe environment for all people living in Kosovo and freedom of movement.
At all times, impartially and in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX), in their respective roles as security responders. The NATO Advisory and Liaison Team (NALT) has supported the development of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), in line with its original civil protection mandate, through coordination of capacity building, education and training. We expect that the security organizations in Kosovo will continue in this cooperative approach, coordinating with KFOR to contribute to security in Kosovo and regional stability, for the benefit of all communities living in Kosovo ,” KFOR’s response to Gazeta Express stated.
Kurti, on the other hand, hosted a meeting with the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Partnerships at NATO, Kevin Hamilton, with whom, according to the Prime Minister's Office, the Gendarmerie was also discussed.
"The establishment of the Kosovo Gendarmerie was also discussed, where in response to Mr. Hamilton's question, Acting Prime Minister Kurti explained the concept and emphasized the need for this structure to strengthen security and coordination with KFOR and NATO in this regard ," the announcement said.
