At the trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague, forensic linguistics expert Helen Fraser stated that the transcripts prepared by the Specialist Prosecutor's Office have a low level of reliability.

During cross-examination by Hashim Thaçi's defense, Fraser said that transcripts cannot be considered sufficiently accurate for use in court proceedings, especially when they serve as the basis for translations and evidence in the courtroom.

"In this case, what conclusion do you have about the reliability and trustworthiness of the ZPS transcripts based on the information we have told you," Thaçi's lawyer asked.

Meanwhile, the expert said that the reliability and trustworthiness of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office transcripts is low.

"The reliability is low not in the sense that I can say that the transcripts are wrong because I can't say that, but I can say that we cannot rely on them as sufficiently accurate transcripts for the judicial process. The fact that we do not have the ability to decipher audio files does not mean that the transcribers are not experienced.

However, expertise and experience in this matter are two different things, we need expertise in this field, not just experience. Also, the lack of a methodology followed in a certain step-by-step process, this in itself leads to the conclusion that we do not have a process, a methodology with clear steps that are important for reliable transcripts, especially in transcripts where translations will be based and when translations will be used in a court environment,” she said.

Thaçi's defense during the interrogation raised doubts about the impartiality of the SPO's transcribers. The lawyer said that some of them had roles close to the investigators.

"In the SPO investigations, we saw that one was a document reviewer, the other a support analyst. Does this indicate some kind of closeness between these translators and SPO investigators? Does it constitute reason to doubt the reliability or trustworthiness of the transcripts that were created by these transcribers?" she said.

The witness then said that you cannot fully rely on these transcripts as accurate sources.

"What I wrote in the report is not that they are incorrect, I am saying that they are unreliable in the sense that you cannot rely on them as accurate," the expert stated.

During her testimony, the Australian expert stated that the lack of time stamps makes the process of evaluating transcripts and comparing them to another transcript or translation difficult.
