Former Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati, has reacted after the statement of the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government in the Government of Serbia, Snezhana Paunovic, who said that, if she had had Slobodan Milosevic's freedom of action, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo."
Through a public reaction, Bushati described the language used by the Serbian official as unacceptable and dangerous, emphasizing that her statement constitutes an insult to the victims of the war in Kosovo and to justice itself.
" The language of the Serbian government minister supporting ethnic cleansing in Kosovo is unacceptable and dangerous. An insult to the victims, their families and justice. There is no place in Europe for rhetoric that justifies and supports ethnic cleansing. Serbia, as a candidate country for the EU, should not be an exception ," Bushati said.
The Serbian minister's statement has caused numerous reactions, after she stated in an interview with the Serbian media outlet Kurir that, if she had been free to act like Slobodan Milosevic, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo" in 1998. These statements have been condemned as a relativization of the crimes committed during the war in Kosovo and have prompted strong criticism in public opinion.
