Romania returns to Eurovision after two years of absence

In 2023, Romania's song failed to qualify for the final and ended up with zero points in the semi-finals. For this reason, the public broadcaster decided to withdraw from the competition in 2024, citing financial and organizational reasons.

But it seems that Romania will return to the Eurovision Song Contest stage in 2026. On October 30, 2025, the board of public broadcaster TVR approved participation in the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Vienna, Austria. The last few years have not been easy for the Romanian representation.

TVR President and CEO Dan-Cristian Turturică said that the two-year break has helped them understand what needs to be changed: "We proposed Romania's return to Eurovision because, during the two-year absence, we had the time to better understand what has not worked in the relationship between TVR, the music industry and creators. We learned what we need to change on our part to have a more competitive selection process and a show that suits the grandeur of the festival."

He stressed that the return is the result of extensive cooperation: "Participation in Eurovision is a team effort. We have spent a lot of time harmonizing the expectations and commitment of all those who must cooperate to ensure the best possible representation of Romania. We also appreciate the understanding of the European Broadcasting Union, which adapted the invitation for the return of TVR, taking into account the challenges our institution is facing."

Turturică added that the participation also aims to strengthen the country's music industry: "With today's decision, TVR reaffirms its commitment to supporting Romanian artists, to valuing the creative potential of the music industry and to promoting Romania on one of the most prestigious international stages." TVR has not yet revealed how the representative song will be selected. More details are expected to be released in the coming months.

Romania debuted at Eurovision in 1994 and has participated 23 times to date. Although it has never won, the country has twice reached third place: in 2005 with Luminita Anghel & Sistem's "Let Me Try", and in 2010 with Paula Seling & Ovi's "Playing With Fire". The worst result remains that of 2023, with zero points in the semi-finals. Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, Romania has qualified for the grand final 14 times out of 18 entries.
