The Albanian Ambassador to Austria, Fate Velaj, has nostalgically remembered a prominent name in Albanian medicine: Dr. Vasil Laboviti. The doctor, who saved 80 Gjirokastrians from being shot by the Germans because he spoke German, studied in Graz, a place that Velaj recently visited and has proposed that one of the auditoriums at the University of Graz be named after Dr. Vasil Laboviti:
"Do you remember the novel "The Wrong Dinner" by Ismail Kadare?"
Do you remember Dr. Gurameto, who represents Dr. Vasil Laboviti, the doctor who saved 80 Gjirokastrians from being shot by the Germans, just because he spoke German, having studied in Graz (1922–1932) and respected the "Hippocratic Oath"?
It was he who treated two German soldiers wounded by partisans...
Today, at the University of Graz, I met with Rector Peter Riedler and told him this story, concluding with the request that one of the university's auditoriums be named "Dr. Vasil Laboviti Hall".
We also talked about deepening the partnership with the University of Shkodra.
After placing the sign (5.2.2026) in the house where Lasgush Poradeci lived, we will soon place another one for Dr. Vasil Laboviti," writes Ambassador Fate Velaj.

And in fact, whenever doctors are mentioned who have worked and served the sick over the years, Vasil Laboviti is remembered the most. He was not just an ordinary doctor, but also a leader who ran the largest hospital in southern Albania for 20 consecutive years.
It's hard to find another doctor who has performed as many surgeries as he has. A full 40 thousand, because life is precious! Doctor Vasili faced the simplest illnesses to those that put their lives in question. He served them, visited them, operated on them when necessary, and brought back their lost smiles.
