Internationally renowned Albanian soprano, Ermonela Jaho, brought to Gjakova one of the most powerful performances of her career, combining operatic masterpieces with tales of pain and stories of the wounds of the war in Kosovo.
The concert "One Voice, One Nation", held at the "Asim Vokshi" cultural center, was transformed into a tribute to two mothers: Pashke Krasniqi and Ferdonije Qerkezi.
Accompanied by the Tirana Opera and Ballet Theater Orchestra under the direction of Spanish master Sergio Alapont, Jaho brought arias by Puccini, Bellini and Albanian works, placing them in the context of the painful stories of Gjakova. The program included “O mio babbino caro”, “Un bel di vedremo”, “Senza mamma” and “Casta diva”, performed with extraordinary emotion.
At several points, Jaho called on stage singers from Gjakova from three different generations, while the children's choir became part of the stage.
The highlight of the evening came with a dedication to the stories of mothers who lost their children in the last war. She particularly connected it to the story of Ferdonije Qerkezi, who has been waiting for news about her two sons and missing husband for 26 years.
Moved to tears, Jaho said that meeting with Mother Ferdonije had deeply shaken her: "I felt a moral obligation to ensure that these stories are not forgotten. This evening has made me a better person and artist."
Elements of national identity such as the xhubleta and the lute accompanied the stage, turning the evening into a powerful interweaving of world art and Albanian history. For Gjakova, this performance remains one of the most important cultural events of recent years.
